There is no way to directly connect HUDWAY Drive to a vehicle OBD-II port.
Instead, use a Bluetooth scanner (dongle) to visualize your car data on HUDWAY Drive.
There are two ways to view the information fetched by a BT OBD-II scanner on HUD. Both are very simple.
Please note that there is no visualisation of OBD-II data in mirroring mode.
1. Connect to the scanner in HUDWAY Drive app.
The key requirement for this connection to work is an OBD scanner based on ELM327 microcontroller and Bluetooth 4.0+.
1. Plug the scanner in the OBD-II port.
IMPORTANT: If left plugged in OBD scanner may drain your car battery. Be sure to unplug it if you suspect it happens.
2. Start the engine.
3. Power on HUDWAY Drive and make sure it's connected to your phone.
4. Launch HUDWAY Drive app and go to its settings (tap the cog in the top right corner).
5. Toggle on Autoconnect to OBD-II:
If you now go back to the dashboard section in the app, you'll see that HUDWAY Drive is now connected to an OBD-II scanner:
IMPORTANT: If you have previously used your OBD-II scanner with your phone, please make sure the two are not paired when you're connecting the scanner to the Drive. Otherwise, the Drive won't be able to connect to the scanner.
You can unpair the two in your phone Settings > Bluetooth. On iPhones tap Info icon, and then Forget This Device. On Android, the path is pretty much the same, just the actions may be named differently.
Currently the following parameters are processed with HUDWAY Drive:
- voltage,
- speed,
- RPM,
- fuel consumption,
- fuel tank level,
- battery voltage,
- engine/coolant temperature,
- engine oil temperature.
You can learn more about widgets here >
We plan to expand the range of supported parameters but anyway, the complete list of the parameters you will be able to see depends on what your vehicle maker has allowed for the BT scanner to get.
They are visualized on the HUD as driving widgets, which can be set to be displayed via HUDWAY Drive app on the smartphone.
If you choose to use navigation (basic directions available in HUDWAY Drive app when the smartphone is connected to HUDWAY Drive over Bluetooth) as one of the widgets, HUDWAY Drive app will take smartphone GPS data to calculate the route, define your location and provide directions, while the speed data will be taken from the connected OBD-II scanner.
If HUDWAY Drive is not connected to the scanner, the speedometer widget will take data from your smartphone GPS.
Please note that we do not recommend connecting the OBDII through the CarScanner app. It is advised to connect the OBDII directly to HUDWAY Drive to avoid any potential connection issues later on.
2. Mirror the scanner app.
In this case, HUDWAY Drive doesn't interact with the scanner and simply mirrors your smartphone screen — therefore, you can use any scanner that works with your vehicle and smartphone.
1. Install the app that is compatible with your scanner and connect your phone and your scanner through the app.
2. Start the engine.
3. Power on HUDWAY Drive and make sure it's connected to your phone.
4. Go to the app settings and tap Mirroring mode to mirror the phone screen to HUDWAY Drive.
You're all set :)
Since a number of widgets that visualize the vehicle data only work when HUDWAY Drive is connected to an OBD-II scanner, they will get hidden in the app when the two are not connected.
