HUDWAY Drive app
Auto-connection feature performs automatic connection between a HUDWAY Drive device and a phone when a user comes close to the Drive device. A regular case is that the Drive app is automatically launched in the background, after that the app starts searching for a Drive device nearby. Having located one (previously paired device), the app automatically connects to it – so it eliminates any manual interactions.
OBD-II dongle
The process starts when the app is running, and the toggle “Autoconnect to OBD-II” is enabled in the app settings (here’s the article on OBD connection) – this way a signal is transmitted to the HUDWAY Drive device, it starts looking for an available OBD dongle and connects to it.
What geo-fencing means here
Geofencing is a mechanism based on creating virtual boundaries (‘geofence’) around a particular location by GPS, WiFi, or RFID and using it for other software and hardware applications which are programmed to respond to fences in a certain manner. The geo-fencing app accesses the real-time location data sent by the tracked device, say, you walk past an antiques store and then you may receive a message advertising their 50% sale today.
In our case, the HUDWAY Drive app keeps an approximate location where the BLE connection to the HUDWAY Drive device was disabled. When you enter the same location again, a pre-programmed trigger wakes the app which allows it to connect to the HUDWAY Drive device automatically and keep running using the BLE connection type.
Why it may not work as expected
Although this feature seems to be an easy and elegant solution, the HUDWAY Drive app is automatically shut down by a phone OS when it has not been connected to the device via BLE for some time. So when a user approaches their car, they still need to launch the app manually.
Moreover, the coordinates where the Drive device was unpaired may fail to be defined correctly due to the location (underground, poor Internet connection, etc.), the phone OS sets the wrong location for reconnection so auto-connection also does not happen.
